My name is Harriet Hobday and after moving from Yorkshire I came to Cambridge to study a BA in Illustration at Cambridge School of Art. Here I learned the importance of observational drawing and narrative illustration. However, it wasn’t until embarking on the MA in Children’s book illustration that I really began to find my own way of image making and visual story telling. Sketchbooks have been integral to this process and using them to observe environments, people, and animals from life normally inspires the characters in my stories. I try to recreate the lively quality of my sketchbook drawings in final images and always aim to portray moments of warmth between my characters. As well as picture book projects focusing on family relationships, I have also made work for older audiences tackling themes of anxiety and loneliness . When i’m not Illustrating, I can normally be found cooking or watching videos of hedgehogs.
