At school my favourite subject was art, but I didn’t get the chance to go to art school. Nevertheless, I kept drawing throughout my job as a lawyer. When my son was little, his clear preferences for some picturebooks over others made me think about what makes a good children’s story with illustrations.
On the course I enjoyed experimenting with different media and technologies, like lithography and linocutting, and working out how pictures enhance words and vice versa. My dissertation was on different ways to depict speech in picturebooks. I like to think of children’s book illustration as a baton-passing continuum of artists, but sometimes it’s difficult to see oneself working in the same field as towering geniuses like Maurice Sendak, Tomi Ungerer and Pauline Baynes. But we keep trying!
