After seven years working at the wonderful Royal Drawing School in London, teaching graphic novels and working on a graphic memoir, I joined the Children’s Book Illustration MA to refresh my creative practice.
The course has not only helped me find a visual voice for my graphic novel, but has given me the opportunity to write and illustrate my own children’s picturebooks. It has also deepened my love of observational drawing, which is now central to my creative process. A sketchbook is not only the best thing to hide behind at parties – taking one with me everywhere I go also allows me to notice and remember the small, funny things that real people and their bodies do, so that I can put them in my stories later.
Most of the people I draw have long noses like me, and most of the dogs I draw have long noses like my greyhound Bertie. He is my number 1 muse and toughest critic.
