Zheyue Zhang
(she/her)
Zheyue, also known as Zoey, is a narrative illustrator and designer from China, with an undergraduate background in Visual Communication Design. Her work is inspired by environmental atmosphere, historical settings, and imagined worlds, and she is particularly interested in epic narratives and fantasy shaped by historical tension and atmospheric unease. She explores visual storytelling across illustration, picture books, comics, and design, selecting forms according to narrative rhythm and structure.
Her creative process often begins with highly atmospheric images, rooted in spatial tension, dramatic light and shadow, and emotionally charged moments. These elements help her shape the pacing and structure of her stories. She primarily works with watercolour and experiments with mixed media to develop visual depth and mood. Sketching functions as an experimental and observational practice, supporting her exploration of colour, space, and imagined environments. Curiosity remains central to her narrative practice.
